FAQ

Product details

  • Which product is best for my baby?
A helpful product compare chart can be found on the website that you might find helpful; however we have also included some useful tips below.
    .
Zen One™ – Best for all babies 0-6 months, because it is the only swaddle that adapts to every sleep style over time. A secure band keeps baby’s arms down to prevent startle reflex, or wraps around belly for arms-free sleeping. Mesh sleeves that allow for finger-sucking can easily be unzipped and removed for more range of movement. *Sizes: Newborn (0-3 months), Small (3-6 months).

Zen Swaddle® – Best for newborns who like to be wrapped snugly to prevent startle reflex, and have not yet started rolling over. If you want a swaddle that can be adapted to provide more freedom of movement as baby grows, the Zen One Swaddle is best. *Size: Small (0-6 months).
    .
Zen Sack™ – Best for babies who have started rolling over, or don’t like being swaddled! The Zen Sack™ is a perfect transition from the swaddle. For tummy sleepers, who can roll independently, the Zen Sack™ can be worn backwards! *Sizes: Small (0-6 months), Medium (6-15 months) or Large (15-24 months) .
    .
Zen PJs™ – Best for active sleepers who find a swaddle or a sack restricting their legs movement! We have two options available: Zen Bodysuit or Zen Footie™. These products are perfect for on-the-go occasions! *Sizes: Small (0-6 months), Medium (6-12 months) .
    .
WARNING – Please do not pair weighted pjs with weighted swaddle or sleep sack. This would be too much weight for your little one’s tiny body! The Zen PJs should only be paired with an unweighted swaddle or sleep sack.
  • What is The Cuddle Effect™?
Medical experts agree: it’s not just the swaddling, the rocking, the lullabies that soothe your baby to sleep. It’s your touch. And it’s vital to your baby’s wellbeing. Recent scientific research on Deep Touch Pressure (DTP) shows that babies experience the Cuddle Effect when they feel gentle pressure in the places you naturally hold them. That means longer, sweeter sleep—until they’re back in your arms.
  • How much do the weighted parts weigh in the Zen Sleepwear?
As per physiotherapy standards used, the pressure applied by the lightly weighted parts is 10% of the body-weight of the area covered by them. This gentle pressure, as light as your palm, is just enough to soothe your baby. Depending on the size of the product, recommended body weight of the baby and area covered, the weighted parts range from 1 to 5 ounces.
  • What is inside the weighted parts of the Zen products?
Each pouch is weighted with non-toxic poly-beads, the same material found in Beanie Babies® or plush toys with weighted limbs.
  • What is the difference between the Classic, Premier, and Winter products?
The Classic line is perfect for year-round use! The fabric is 100% cotton.

The Premier line is more lightweight and breathable than the Classic line, making it perfect for warmer climates or babies who overheat easily! The fabric is a blend of 70% bamboo + 30% cotton.

The WINTER line is the warmest option, perfect for cooler climates or AC in the summer! The fabric has two layers of 100% cotton with a heavy poly-fiber filling in between.
  • What does TOG mean?
TOG is a measure of thermal resistance of a unit area, also known as thermal insulation. It is commonly used by manufacturers in the textile industry to indicate how warm a clothing or bed cover is. The higher the TOG, the better thermal insulation it provides and the warmer it is. One thing to note is that bamboo fiber is naturally thermal regulating, which means it is cooler during warm weather and warmer during cool weather. The Premier can withstand temperatures between 65-90 degrees. The Classic can withstand temperatures between 50-80 degrees. The Winter is best at 50 degrees or less. Use these temperatures as guides but use your discretion to ensure your baby is not overheating or too cold by placing your hand on their chest or belly.
  • What is the 2-sizes-in-1 feature of the Zen Swaddle?
The interior pouch of the Zen Swaddle® keeps your baby's legs snug and cozy for the first few weeks. This will help reduce your little one's startle-reflex! Once your baby outgrows the interior pouch, you simply place their legs on top of the pouch, directly into the roomy exterior pouch, which allows your baby to freely kick their legs!
  • What is the grow-with-me feature of the Zen Sack?
There are 2 sets of snaps on the shoulders of the Zen Sack™. The bottom snap offers a snug fit, while the top snap offers more room as your baby grows!
  • Does Zen Sleepwear allow for easy diaper changes?
The Zen One™, Zen Sack™, and Zen Footie™ all have a 2-way zipper for easy diaper changes.

The Zen Bodysuit has snaps for easy diaper access.
  • Can Zen Sleepwear be washed?
All the Zen Sleepwear can be washed frequently! To protect the fabric quality, we recommend washing in cold water, on a gentle cycle and tumble dry on low heat.

Product use

  • Is Zen Sleepwear only for babies with sleep problems?
As you would agree, the benefits of touch far surpass just sleep. It increases your baby’s sense of security and socio-emotional well-being. While the Zen Sleepwear is effective at helping solve infant sleep challenges, their benefits extend beyond sleep.
  • Is Zen Sleepwear only to be used for nighttime sleeping or can my baby wear them for naps as well?
We recommend using the Zen Sleepwear for all sleep - naps and nighttime! With consistent use, your little one will form a positive sleep association to the gently weighted parts. Zen Sleepwear will become a sleep cue, signaling that it's time to snooze!

  • How should I swaddle using the Zen Swaddle®?
Swaddling instructions with helpful illustrations can be found under the How To Swaddle section.
  • What is the Startle or Moro Reflex?
Moro Reflex (startle reflex) in infants is a response to sudden loss of support. Find a helpful article here on moro-reflex. It‘s primary significance is in evaluating the integration of the baby’s nervous system. When your baby gets a sense of falling or hears a loud noise (even the sound of their own crying) they feel insecure and get startled. Sometimes even the quietest of sounds and movements may startle a sensitive baby. They will extend their arms and legs, open their fingers and arch their back. Then will clench their fists and pull their arms to their chest. Your baby may also cry. Your baby should react to startle reflex until he or she is 4 to 6 months of age. Research says that parents touching or picking up the child and holding him or her in their arms gives the baby a sense of security. They also say if a womb-like environment can be created your baby will drift off to sleep better after the Moro Reflex. Since swaddling creates a womb like environment for your baby, it is recommended by many.
  • How do I know if my baby has outgrown the interior pouch of the Zen Swaddle®?
For smaller babies, the interior pouch provides added safety and prevents them from sliding down in the swaddle. It is also designed to help young babies sleep through the startle reflex by keeping their legs snug. Use this pouch until your baby is at least 1 month old and 23 inches long. You should switch your baby to the larger, exterior pouch, once he or she grows longer than 23 inches, has straighter legs, and no longer fits inside the pouch.
  • How long should I swaddle my baby?
Most babies love being swaddled until they are 3-4 months old and before they start to roll over. After the initial few months, when deciding how long to swaddle your newborn, we advise to take cues from your baby. If your baby is calmer when swaddled, sleeps easier and longer you may continue to swaddle him or her even after the first few months. If your baby rolls over while swaddled, then having their hands free is important for their safety. After crossing this milestone, we recommend swaddling your baby with their arms out.
  • Can your products be used for tummy sleepers?
For tummy sleepers, we recommend putting the Zen Sack on backwards, so the weighted pad rests gently on your baby’s back instead of their chest! However, this is only safe for babies who can roll over and back independently.
  • Can I swaddle with my baby’s arms out?
Yes, both the Zen One™ and Zen Swaddle® allow for arms-out swaddling:

Zen One - Remove mesh sleeves to uncover baby’s hand.

Zen Swaddle - Wrap swaddle wings under baby’s arms instead of over the shoulders.
  • Is Zen Sleepwear safe for babies who roll over?
Our Zen Sack™, Zen Footie™ and Zen Bodysuit are perfectly safe for babies who roll! The weight is light and flexible, so it will nearly flatten underneath your baby's body! However, if you find your baby becomes primarily a tummy sleeper, you can put the Zen Sack™ on backwards, so the weight rests on your little one's back instead of their chest! Of course, this is only safe for babies who can roll completely independently, over and back again.
  • Can Zen Sleepwear be used for tummy sleepers?
Yes! For tummy sleepers (who can roll completely independently), the Zen Sack™ can be worn backwards, so the weight rests gently on your baby's back instead of their chest!
  • How can the Zen One™ be used in different ways?
The Zen One adapts to your baby’s unique sleep style at every stage.

Newborns: Secure bands holds arms down to prevent startle reflex

Active sleepers: Breathable mesh sleeves keep arms in but visible, so babies can self-soothe during sleep.

Transitioning babies: Removable sleeves allow one or both arms out for range of movement
  • How do I know which mesh sleeve goes on which side of the Zen One?
When reattaching the sleeves, the zipper should start at the back of the product and zip over the baby’s shoulder to the front. The final position should be at your baby’s armpit. If you’re having trouble zipping the sleeves back on, try switching them.
  • How do I prevent the Zen One from riding up?
When placing the baby in the product, make sure the product neckline falls right at the base of baby's neck. This will ensure that the product does not ride up as the baby wiggles.

When the secure band is not being used to position the baby’s hands by their sides, it should be secured comfortably around the baby’s belly. This also prevents the product from riding up on a squirmy baby.

Product safety

  • What is the level of safety testing performed on Zen Sleepwear?
At Nested Bean we take baby safety very seriously. When it came to designing and developing the safest product for your baby, we worked with multiple safety laboratories, all of whom are accredited by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. To ensure safety in both design and quality, we involved safety firms at multiple stages of our product’s design and development, always ensuring the highest level of compliance.
  • Does Zen Sleepwear meet all current safety standards?
All Zen Sleepwear has undergone extensive tests to meet both mandatory and voluntary safety standards, ensuring that your little one is sleeping in the highest quality sleepwear. The materials are designed to withstand frequent spit-ups and the subsequent multiple washes as well as your little one’s vigorous kicks and wiggles.
  • Are there any safety tips or precautions before I use these products?
    • When laying baby down for swaddling, ensure proper positioning of swaddle wings and weighted areas around your baby, by placing infant’s shoulders no lower than 1 ½ inches below the top edge of the back panel. .
    • Do not allow infants to slide down inside swaddle. Place infants less than 23” tall or less than 1 month old with feet inside the inner pocket and pull pocket over waist. Fold any extra fabric at the bottom of the swaddle up over torso and secure with swaddle wings. .
    • Swaddle wings must be securely tucked under your infant’s body. However, ensure swaddle is not too tight by slipping your hand between baby and swaddle; it should feel snug but not uncomfortable. .
    • Ensure the swaddle's side weights are placed on each side, starting under infant’s arms down to the thigh. Do not allow to move up onto infant’s chest. .
    • Ensure the center weight is always placed on the lower chest and the top edge of blanket covering the baby is always at the chest level, never above your infant’s neck or covering his or her nose and mouth. .
    • Never use swaddle with products with restraints such as car seats, strollers, swings, etc. .
    • If you use a dryer to dry the Zen Sleepwear, wait until it cools down. Your baby’s skin is sensitive so waiting until cool will ensure there are no burns.
  • What safety precautions should be used when swaddling?
    • Experts say proper swaddling reduces the risk of SIDS. However, following safe swaddling practice is just as important for the safety of your baby. .
    • A swaddle must be securely tucked under infant’s body. However, ensure that swaddle is not too tight by slipping an adult hand between baby and swaddle; it should feel snug but not uncomfortable. .
    • Never swaddle using any product when your baby is sick, has a cough or fever in order to prevent restriction in breathing. .
    • Always place baby on their back to sleep, especially when swaddled. .
    • Always remove swaddle from crib when not in use. .
    • Never use a swaddle with products with restraints such as car seats, strollers, swings, etc.
  • How do I create a safe sleep environment for my baby?
    • Do not use any objects such as pillows or soft toys in your infant’s sleeping environment. .
    • Never place your swaddled infant on soft surfaces such as your bed, a couch, an air mattress etc. as your baby can rollover and suffocate. .
    • Never sleep with your child in an adult bed, an adult can roll on top of an infant and cause suffocation. .
    • Place your baby to sleep in an appropriate sleep product such as a crib, cradle, or bassinet. .
    • Use discretion when using any covering on your infant in warm rooms. Take care and periodically check that your baby is not overheated. Overheating may be a factor in SIDS. Do not over bundle. Always provide supervision for continued safety of your child. When not sleeping, never leave your baby unattended.
  • How do I know if the weight of the accessories is right for my baby?
As per physiotherapy standards, the application of weight equivalent to 10% of one’s body weight is considered to add positive or therapeutic pressure to relieve stress and induce calm. The weight of the center area of our products is calibrated at 2 ounces. For babies 7 lbs. and over, 2 ounces of weight is less than 10% of their chest weight. This weight is simply meant to mimic the gentle sensation of your palm on your baby’s chest, which at times can be more than 2 ounces.
  • Will my baby overheat when using the Zen Sleepwear?
Temperature control is important as newborns are not good at regulating their own body temperature. The temperature in your baby’s room should feel comfortable to an adult in light clothing. The light-weight fabric our products are constructed to ensure that your baby will not overheat due to swaddling alone. The filling density in the weighted parts of the Zen Swaddle®, Zen Sack™ and Zen PJs™ is kept to the minimum to balance effectiveness and your baby’s safety.
